September 12th-16th

Writing:
We are working on writing complete sentences and avoiding fragments.  We'll work on including appropriate nouns and verb tense as well.  In writer's workshop we will focus on "hooking" the reader with our openings in writing.  This is always fun to see how creative your kiddos get!  

Life Journals (diary):  DUE every Friday 
Life Journals are going home today.  The assignment is to write about a current event (going to a movie, playing at the park, going to a birthday party, soccer game, etc.) and include at least a half page written summary of the event.  Also tape in a trinket or item (receipt, wrapper, photo, flyer, etc.) from the event.  If there is not anything to tape in then your child can draw and color a picture.  Everyone shares theirs every Fridays so it's important to return by then.     

Spelling:
Spelling words will go home on Monday in the Green Folders along with a menu of ideas of how to practice at home.  We will check for understanding on these words on Friday.

Reading:
During reading workshop we will practice buddy reading this week.  We plan to work with a friend to discuss stories that we read while checking for understanding of the book.  We will also work on summarizing a story using the elements of a story- characters, setting, problem, solution.

Math:
We will continue place value this week.  We will go to the hundreds place.  We will compare numbers with greater than and less than also.  We will work on the value of a digit in each of the places (ones, tens, hundreds).  We will use expanded form and other forms to represent numbers along with ordering and skip counting on number lines and hundreds charts.  We need a few things from home.  If you can donate any of these food items let me know!  

Needs:
1 box saltines
1 bag of veggie straws
1 large bag of skittles

Science:
We will dip a little deeper into the "Matter of things" this week.  We will discuss the three types of matter and where they exists in our world.  We will take a walk outside to find types of matter and we'll discuss types of matter we can find at home.
