October 24th-28th

Writing:
This week will will write a informational letter from the perspective of a bat.  We will discuss facts and opinions about bats that will be included in our writing. We will work through the writing process on this.  We will also begin informational writing this week on a student-chosen topic. 

Spelling:
We have started our phonics study this week with a program called Phonics Dance.  The kids love the dance moves that go along with the sounds.  This week we will work on -ir -er - ur


Reading:
We will work on text features in nonfiction books and also graphic features.  We will discuss how these features help us to locate information and how they help readers to understand the writing.    


Math:
We will continue solving 2 digit math problems this week by using all the strategies we have learned so far- draw a picture, number line, partial sums.  We will begin regrouping (carrying numbers) with 2 digit subtraction this week.  We are using CUBES to solve word problems.  It stands for C-circle they numbers, U- underline the question, B- box key words, E- eliminate any unnecessary info. S- does the answer make Sense.  We do CUBES on every word problem and it should be used on math homework too, if word problems are on it.  Math homework is due on Wednesdays. 


Social Studies:
This week we will continue our study on good citizenship.  We will work on community projects this week.  We have interest groups that are working on a plan to help the hungry, homeless, and elderly.  We will also begin to research presidents and discuss why someone should vote for us as a president.
